Offered in the fourth semester, this elective immerses participants in early-stage investing through a simulated venture capital investment process. Working with start-ups from the WISE Tech Accelerator, participants take on the role of venture analysts, conducting due diligence, engaging directly with founders, and evaluating ventures using the analytical rigour expected of venture capital associates.
Through structured founder interactions, secondary research, and market and business analysis, participants learn how venture capital professionals evaluate early-stage start-ups. They assess market opportunity, founder–market fit, business model viability, competitive positioning, traction, scalability, and investment readiness before synthesising their findings into an Investment Committee (IC) Memo. The strongest teams may also be invited to present their investment thesis before a jury of venture capital partners.
Offered in the sixth semester, this elective immerses participants in one of entrepreneurship’s most fundamental challenges: understanding customer needs and validating business opportunities. Working directly with founders from the WISE Tech Accelerator, participants learn how customer insights shape successful ventures.
Using frameworks such as Jobs-to-be-Done, First Principles Thinking, Forces of Behaviour Change, and Customer and Industry Ecosystem Mapping, participants conduct customer discovery, identify unmet needs, synthesise market insights, and develop stronger value propositions. By combining classroom learning with field immersion, the course develops an entrepreneurial mindset, customer-centric thinking, and the ability to validate customer needs and business opportunities systematically before building and scaling new ventures.
Participants enrolled in these electives are also invited to participate in selected WISE Tech Accelerator workshops, providing first-hand exposure to the venture-building journey beyond the classroom. Through interactions with founders, mentors, investors, and accelerator specialists, students gain deeper insights into product-market fit, go-to-market strategy, fundraising, storytelling, team building, scaling, and the day-to-day realities of building an early-stage venture.
By integrating classroom learning with the WISE Tech Accelerator, participants observe how entrepreneurial concepts are applied as ventures navigate the challenges of building and scaling a business.
Together, these electives provide complementary perspectives from founders and investors. Participants learn how ventures are discovered, built, evaluated, and funded, developing the analytical rigour, strategic judgement, and entrepreneurial mindset valued across careers in venture capital, entrepreneurship, strategic consulting, product management, corporate innovation, and start-up leadership.
