SP Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) is setting up a centre for big data in marketing in collaboration with the University of Michigan.
The centre will serve as a platform for collection and dissemination of knowledge of big data to students and corporates. It will also have a training programme for companies on how to use big data. Experts from industry and global universities will offer their services. "Business schools are trying to create people who can serve as a link between analytical mindset and decision making," says Anil Kulkarni, professor, SPJIMR. Recently a Director from Larsen & Toubro was discussing with the students at SPJIMR about the impact of fall in crude price on the Indian Economy. Apparently
India has benefitted by the reduced import bill for crude and the corresponding fall in the current account deficit. However, looking at corporate entities with global business especially with oil producing countries, one derives a different picture. With U.S. and Latin America becoming oil-producing countries, economic power is getting re-aligned.

As the inaugural session eased into the first panel discussion on of the day, the topic, ‘Innovation in Higher Education’ was brought out in different ways, from pedagogy to admission process, from the entire concept of education to field training and student experience to faculty training. Prof. R. S. S. Mani, VP, ITM Group of Institutions, talked of making the MBA programme more suitable for students so that they do not treat the institution merely as an employment exchange. It’s not just the students who are confused about difference between a regular 2 year MBA in India for freshers and a GMAT-based MBA for executives. The lack of awareness extends to HR folks and recruitment managers working in leading companies as well. Srini (name changed) who worked with us this season, got into a reputed full-time 1 year Indian MBA for executives along with a few international programs as well. Like most folks joining such programs, after graduating he’s keen on exploring new career opportunities in different industries. He chose to attend the Indian MBA program over an overseas MBA.
