Alumni journeys
Take advice from someone who is where you want to be!
GMP alumni share their experiences at SPJIMR, the reason they chose this particular B-school, their struggles in landing an internship offer in a foreign country, and, of course, making a mark for themselves in a new country with unfamiliar faces. No journey is ever easy, but the experiences and the lessons learned are what make it worthwhile.
From scripts to strategies

“I am a writer and have been involved in Bollywood, having written scripts and TV ads and even acted alongside famous Bollywood celebrities. However, I wanted to complete my education by pursuing an MBA. I had three criteria in mind: the programme should offer global exposure and possess reputable global accreditations, be ranked among the top 5 B-schools in India, and allow me to transition back into Bollywood without wasting time.“
I considered various options, including IIMs, but ultimately chose SPJIMR, as it fulfilled all my requirements. While other programmes would have taken two years, SPJIMR allowed me to complete the programme in just 1.5 years, including the internship, and I also gained dual alumni status.
I have recently accepted an offer from Amazon.
For those considering the GMP programme, I encourage you to dive in, as it provides invaluable international exposure that enhances your CV. Recruiters recognise the effort it takes to –relocate to an unfamiliar country and appreciate your resilience and adaptability.
Additionally, joining SPJIMR offers a fee waiver, making it a financially savvy choice as compared to joining IÉSEG independently.

Networking for success

“I received first-hand feedback about SPJIMR’s GMP programme from my childhood friends who are also my colleagues, highlighting its advantages over other non-conventional courses and MBAs. Even before joining the programme, I understood that managing my time would be challenging, a skill I certainly honed during my studies.“
I was particularly interested in IÉSEG, which would have been difficult to apply to directly. The GMP proved to be an excellent return on investment. The education provided in the GMP is truly unparalleled, which is something one actively seeks.
Regarding Europe, by the time I completed my studies, it was the height of COVID-19, and companies were cancelling their internships due to their difficulties. I was fortunate to be mentored by a GMP alumnus who went above and beyond during this challenging time—a privilege to be part of the SPJIMR family!
I struggled for two months in Paris, sent out 100s of applications, and attended numerous interviews before finally securing an offer from Electronica, a tech forum in France, where I currently work. Maintaining a strong network is crucial for landing internships and job opportunities. The most satisfying aspect of this experience is the relatively low competition, the emphasis on work-life balance, and the positive company culture.

Overcoming internship challenges

“When I considered pursuing my MBA, I sought a different path—attending a B-school overseas. However, I also recognised the possibility of returning to India, so I did not want to close that door. My challenge was to keep both options open at all times. This is why SPJIMR’s GMP was invaluable, allowing me to start in India and later move to Europe.“
Finding an internship in this country was no cakewalk. Companies here sought relevant experience, which I lacked. Additionally, my unfamiliarity with local languages—German, French, and Dutch—compounded the difficulty. I was searching for opportunities in marketing communications, and advertising but felt lost, as my academic scores and brand names from school and college did not significantly impact my internship prospects. Employers expected candidates to possess hands-on experience, meaning I had to be job-ready, without requiring further training.
However, things definitely improved after my first internship. I anticipated that securing my first break would be challenging. To enhance my language skills, I even worked at McDonald’s as a cashier. I realised that digital marketing could be my entry point, so I pursued a course to gain relevant skills, opening doors to German companies.
Ultimately, it is all about what I want to achieve and how I plan to progress in my career. I encountered numerous opportunities, but my efforts to upskill and adapt to market demands were crucial; without that determination, my efforts would have been in vain.
