Anirudh Shingal, Professor of Economics and Chair, Department of Economics and Policy at SPJIMR, has contributed to the Trade in Services Report published by the Scottish Government. The report was prepared by the Fraser of Allander Institute at the University of Strathclyde, in collaboration with Prosper and the Centre for Inclusive Trade Policy at the University of Sussex Business School.

The report provides an in-depth assessment of Scotland’s international trade in services, covering sectors including finance, professional and business services, science and research, creative industries, digital technologies, and energy. It explores opportunities for Scottish exporters in global markets while identifying regulatory and non-regulatory barriers that continue to affect international market access and competitiveness.

Prof. Shingal contributed expert analysis on global services trade restrictiveness, drawing on his research in international trade, trade policy, and services liberalisation. His contribution strengthens the report’s evidence base and supports recommendations aimed at improving market access, enhancing regulatory cooperation and enabling services-led economic growth.

Commenting on the publication, Prof. Shingal said:

“The report brings together expertise from leading academic institutions and policy organisations to support evidence-based policymaking and strengthen Scotland’s long-term trade strategy. It also underscores the growing importance of international research collaborations in addressing complex global policy challenges. The findings emphasise that the importance of market access issues, and regulatory and institutional alignment for the growth of services trade are not just salient for Scotland but are equally applicable to a services-trade-dependent economy like India.”
