Viraasat, CFBE’s marquee event to celebrate its legacy of 25 years in family business and entrepreneurship, was successfully held at Taj, Santacruz. The theme of Viraasat 2023 was Mission Glocal: Empowering Indian Family Businesses to Lead the World. It brought together members of the ecosystem to exchange knowledge and strengthen networks. The event was graced by the Hon’ble Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Government of India, Shri. Nitin Gadkari, who delivered the inaugural address. Mr. Deepak Parekh, Chairman HDFC Ltd and Chairman, SPJIMR Board of Governors, delivered the chairman’s address. The event was attended by Guest of Honour Mr. Anant Singhania – CEO, JK Enterprises and President, Indian Merchants’ Chamber (IMC), as well as dignitaries Mr. Jagdish Lakhani- Joint Executive Secretary, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, and Mr. Yogi Sriram -Advisor to CEO & MD Group HR, L&T.

SPJIMR CFBE’s Executive Director and Chairperson, PGPFMB, Prof. Tulsi Jayakumar, delivered the opening address at the Viraasat event, where she reflected on the 25-year legacy of the PGPFMB programme. She reminisced about how the programme was conceived by our former Honorary Dean, Late Dr M.L. Shrikant. She said, “It was the desire for freedom to design course curricula, pedagogy, and management programmes for the underserved sector that motivated SPJIMR to disaffiliate from Mumbai University in 1991. This same sense of freedom and social ethos was also the reason for introducing a separate programme for scions of family-managed businesses in 1997”. She highlighted the programme’s success, which has graduated over 4000 participants since its inception in 1997, and various initiatives that built on the programme’s inherited legacy, including accreditation, which has helped establish the PGPFMB programme in a niche of its own. She then shared insights about CFBE working closely with the family business ecosystem to foster transgenerational entrepreneurship.

“Innovation and entrepreneurship are the future of India, and we must focus on creating wealth and employment using futuristic technology and reducing imports,” said Shri. Nitin Gadkari, Hon’ble Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Government of India. “SPJIMR is playing an important role in shaping the future of India’s family businesses through CFBE and its various programmes and initiatives.” SPJIMR Dean Varun Nagaraj, in his message, highlighted how the event aligns with SPJIMR’s mission to influence practice and promote value-based growth through pioneering programmes and pedagogical innovations.

The plenary session, FMB Trailblazers, featured panel members discussing the latest trends affecting global and Indian industry, while Session 1, Changing Gears: Innovating Disruptions to Zoom Ahead, featured panel members discussing innovations in disruptions. Session 2, A Tête-à-tête with Family Business Entrepreneurs, had guest speakers sharing their experiences and insights. The winners of the Beta Start event also presented their innovative startup ideas. The event also featured the vRddhi Pitch Fest, where fund seekers and investors came together to connect and explore opportunities. Session 3, Attracting Growth Capital, featured panel members discussing ways to attract growth capital. The event concluded with a Fireside Chat with Startup Trailblazers. Interactions at an event like Viraasat create opportunities to strengthen the family businesses and, through them, the Indian economy – of which the family businesses are a backbone.
