Programme Genesis
In a workplace that is becoming increasingly complex with companies facing socio-cultural evolution, there is a pressing need for creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. Worldwide, the inclusion of women in leadership roles has become a critical competitive advantage. India can potentially boost its GDP by 60% in the next 10 years if it were to use the full potential of women in its workforce. As India is emerging to be an economic and cultural superpower, focusing on gender diversity at work is not just the right thing, but also the smart thing to do.
Although there is increasing practitioners' interest in developing women leaders, the business world is grappling with the issues of gender diversity and shrinking women leadership pipeline. A 2017 BCG survey of Indian companies stated that women's representation in Indian firms, stands at around 27 percent of the country's total workforce, while globally, this figure is 38 percent. Moreover, women account for just 17 percent of senior management positions in India, compared to 26 percent in emerging Asia-Pacific countries. The survey further found that even the well-intended and designed gender diversity programmes failed to create an impact because they were poorly executed.
Of the participants who believed that their company is focused on promoting diversity, only 29% believed that they have benefited from the programme. Women comprise 48% of the population in India. However, less than 27% of women are a part of the workforce.
This number is further threatened, as the percentage of women in India dropping out of white collar jobs in mid-career is as high as 48 percent, as compared to the Asian average of 21 percent.
Women, who against all odds aspire to get back to work, often face many socio-cultural and structural barriers and realize that in this fast-moving world, skill-sets become obsolete in no time. This nuanced understanding led to a felt need to create a platform for women to relaunch their career after a break.
