The Post Graduate Programme in Family Managed Business (PGPFMB) conducted a mentor-mentee workshop for its 34th batch on the theme ‘Professionalising your Family Business’. Prof. Tulsi Jayakumar, Executive Director of SPJIMR CFBE, and Prof. Kamal Sharma, Vice President of Lupin and Executive in Residence at SPJIMR, facilitated the session. This annual workshop, part of the second phase of the programme, unites participants and their respective mentors to discuss critical topics relevant to both groups.
Prof. Jayakumar highlighted the value of bringing external stakeholders into family businesses, explaining that their fresh perspectives and objectivity are crucial for success in today’s dynamic market. She pointed out that professionally managed businesses not only survive longer but also grow larger, become more productive, and scale faster. The session centred on key frameworks for professionalising family businesses, starting with identifying the unique qualities and strengths that drive success and then adopting modern corporate practices that align with and enhance the business’s culture.
Completely understanding that family and business both are the two pillars of a family enterprise, where challenges in one often impact the other, the mentor-mentee workshops underscore the significance of aligning all family members toward a common business goal. PGPFMB recognises the senior generation’s crucial role as mentors in the participants’ learning journey, offering knowledge sessions and workshops tailored to address this.
The mentor-mentee workshop remains a favourite event in the PGPFMB community, fostering a blend of ideas, family values, and business strategies. It also serves as a valuable networking opportunity for mentors and business owners from diverse sectors across India.
SPJIMR’s PGPFMB, established in 1997, is India’s pioneering programme for family-managed businesses. It prepares new entrants to lead their family businesses while preserving the legacy of previous generations. With 37 batches completed, the programme continues to grow in influence and reach.
