Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on Field-based Case Writing

May 23, 2025

SPJIMR Teaching and Learning Academy (TLA) welcomed 15 participants, including faculty members and scholars from across India, to the 2025 edition of its Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on Field-Based Case Writing. The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Janakiraman Moorthy, Associate Dean, Academics and Research, alongside our expert facilitators Prof. Debmallya Chatterjee and Prof. Amol Dhaigude.

The FDP adopted a hands-on learning approach to equip participants with the skills to develop high-impact, practice-oriented teaching cases. Prof. Chatterjee remarked, “When it comes to developing cases with engaging narratives, analogies drawn from Bollywood are very effective,” highlighting the value of cultural context in storytelling.

Day 1: “A field-based case is a suspense thriller in the making!” — Prof. Amol Dhaigude

The programme commenced with identifying the right case protagonists, those with a compelling story to tell, and concluded with a live, high-energy interview simulation.

Day 2: “A case is like the first half of a movie before the interval.” — Prof. Amol Dhaigude

Day 2 moved to scripting the story, which is the front-end of the case. Facilitators led participants through their structured approach and hands-on writing techniques. Participants worked in small groups to brainstorm, write and edit, energising the class with their creativity.

Day 3: “Teaching Notes (TN) are like the climax of the movie” — Prof. Amol Dhaigude

The final session focused on the Teaching Notes (TN), which Prof. Dhaigude noted is like the movie post-interval. Prof. Chatterjee decoded the art of aligning TNs with learning objectives and publication expectations. Participants explored platforms, publishing tips, and the review journey.

This structured, collaborative and fun format enabled participants to leave the programme not only with enhanced capabilities but with a case-in-progress grounded in real-world engagement and enriched through mentorship and peer feedback. The 3-day FDP ended not just with knowledge, but with stories that matter, characters that inspire, and teaching tools that sparked ideas.

I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a Case Writing Workshop at SPJIMR (S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research) in May 2024. It was an enriching experience and a great learning platform for academicians aspiring to write and publish impactful cases. Prof. Amol Dhaigude and Prof. Debmallya Chatterjee skillfully conducted the workshop, whose insights and guidance made the sessions truly engaging and thought-provoking. I am grateful for this valuable experience!

Poonam Vatharkar, Assistant Professor, MES Institute of Management & Career Courses (IMCC), Pune

The two-day workshop was a masterclass in transforming my understanding of case studies. How to weave dry facts and figures into a compelling narrative that grabs the attention of a reviewer? Think Emerald Publishing standards! Just like a well-crafted case study, the workshop had its own set of heroes — professors Amol Dhaigude and Debmallya Chaterrjee captivated us with insights and expertise. Prof. Tanvi Mankodi, along with her team, masterfully orchestrated the entire experience. A heartfelt thank you.

Great learning, clarity, new dimension and above all…all with fun…the memes shared by professors Deb and Amol being my favourite. A formal FDP has never been so fun learning…thank you for making it easy for all of us…looking forward to more such experiences.

The entire hands-on structure of the FDP was great, being taught a concept then asked to apply it worked very well to at least get started. The feedback and guidance at every step of the way was super helpful. I really appreciate both Professors being so candid and sharing what works for them without any gatekeeping. Kudos to the profs for all the fun elements and creating such a wholesome, family-like vibe. Thank you, for a superb experience!!
