New course at SPJIMR to boost critical thinking skills

August 8, 2017

SP Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR) has introduced a compulsory credit course in Management and Liberal Arts as part of its full-time MBA programme, with an aim to help develop critical thinking skills as well as enhance creativity and out-of-the-box thinking.

“Many of our students come from engineering and STEM academic backgrounds. They are often unfamiliar in dealing with unstructured problems … We wanted our students to develop and appreciate a whole-brained approach — right-brained (creative, intuitive) and left-brained (structured, rational) to the increasingly complex situations that they are likely to encounter in the real world,” said Bindu Kulkarni, Associate Programme Head-PGDM at SPJIMR.

These challenges are usually unstructured and demand big-picture thinking, in addition to detailed analysis and specific action. Plus, there is the need in the current uncertain global business scenario to be able to adapt to multiple and rapidly changing landscape, she said. The course was co-designed and developed by SPJIMR and Makarand R Paranjape, Professor of English.
