” A New Measure for Scattering of Stocks in Retail E-commerce Fulfilment Warehouses”
In retail e-commerce fulfilment warehouses (REFWs), customer orders are characterised by high product range and single unit picks with an expectation of quick delivery. This has motivated the development of a scattered storage assignment strategy that spreads the stocks of each SKU across the warehouse to reduce the pickup time and effort. This paper discusses the few available measures of the extent of scattering of stocks. Then it proposes the entropy of stock arrangement as a new measure that possesses some desirable properties which the existing measures lack. A replenishment heuristic is also proposed in this paper with the objective to maximise the scatter captured using the proposed measure. The consistency and impact of this new measure on order picking is checked through a simulation study. Through the simulation study, we also bring out managerial insights into designing and managing a warehouse with scattered storage arrangements of stocks.
