The clash of perspectives: Image vs. identity in 2025

Yashvardhan Joshi, PGDM 2025-27

On November 20, the ADMAP committee, Communications Excellence Lab (CEL), presented a spectacular display of intellect titled ‘The Clash of Perspectives’. The event lived up to its promise. It featured esteemed faculty members teaming up with students for a lively debate characterised by sharp wit and profound wisdom. The atmosphere was electric as the participants tackled the provocative motion: ‘In 2025, image matters more than identity’.

Team 1 presented a pragmatic and sharp critique of modern perception. Led by Prof. Vidhu Shekhar alongside students Kanhaiya Dhanuka, Saharsh Ranjan, and Aayushi Agrawal, they argued that image is now the inescapable operating system of society. They posited that the image acts as the mandatory gatekeeper. Without a strong initial visual, the deeper identity never gets a chance to be examined. Their arguments ranged from the impact of viral clips on elections to the influence of tweets on stock prices. They effectively demonstrated that the world reacts to what travels fastest, which is almost always the image rather than the complex truth.

Team 2 countered with a spirited defence of the authentic self. Prof. Sunny Arora led this group, supported by students Aditi Kabra, Jeevika Ganesh, and Paarth Jaitly. They argued that image is transactional and fragile, whereas identity is the solid foundation of reality. One speaker noted that while a polished image might get you hired, only your identity keeps you employed. They warned against the ‘deep fake’ culture. They urged the audience to look past the surface to find real sustenance rather than getting lost in the noise of algorithms.

This event by the CEL was not just an academic exercise. It was a mirror held up to our digital lives. It forced everyone to question whether we are cultivating substance or merely managing a performance.
