PGEMP Batch 84 | Year: 2021-2023
2021: Manager, Production, Larsen & Toubro Ltd.

This was a joint live project. My seniors at work and the professors helped me select the project and guided me every step of the way. In simple layman’s terms, L&T needed to almost double its production capacity of cyclones and steam separators without compromising quality, using the existing infrastructure and resources at minimal cost. Moreover, this needed to be sustained.

We used new technology and changed workflow and processes with the same manpower and minimal costs to deliver on schedule. Our production increased by 52% from 76 units/year to 116 units/year. This growth has not only been sustained for almost 3 years now. It has also percolated into other product lines. The older processes were changed, resulting in shorter delivery schedules. We also managed to reduce delivery time by 35%. This project also empowered women. Almost all the operators are now women because of robotics. We explored and implemented a station-based workflow with fixed activities at these stations, resulting in a dramatic increase in productivity.

This project qualified for the Quality Forum of India awards. It got awards at the state level, then at the national level, and also at the international level. It got a silver at the ICQCC in Beijing, China. Not only did PGEMP help me and my team get awards, but it also helped me get into my current position with its invaluable learning experience

The capstone project made a huge difference to the productivity of the existing units. The awards got noticed. The HR team informed me that I was eligible for a new role because I had completed my MBA. They warned me that it was a challenging role and that I would need to face multiple interviews. I was excited because it was the position of executive assistant to Mr. A.M. Naik, the chairman emeritus of the L&T Group. I had the option to explore this rotational job or continue with my current role.

These are excerpts from his interview featured in the PGEMP Impact Book (January 2025)
