SPJIMR FMB leads panel on purpose-driven growth

November 7, 2025

At SPJIMR, we believe purpose is more than a guiding idea — it serves as a strategic compass that shapes how organisations think, grow, and contribute to society. SPJIMR’s work in the family business domain is grounded in the conviction that when enterprises align their growth with meaningful purpose, they not only sustain themselves but also create lasting impact. Purpose strengthens culture, enhances governance, and enables decisions that go beyond profit to build legacy and resilience.

This perspective took centre stage at the 12th SBI Banking and Economics Conclave in Mumbai, where Prof. Tulsi Jayakumar, Executive Director – Centre for Family Business & Entrepreneurship and Independent Director, SBI Foundation, moderated a distinguished panel on ‘Scaling with Purpose’. The discussion examined how family enterprises—long the backbone of India’s entrepreneurial landscape—can continue to power the nation’s economic resilience when guided by a clear and shared purpose.

The panel featured SPJIMR FMB alumni and industry leaders:

  • Pranav Sharma, Baidyanath (PGPFMB Alumni, 2006)
  • Sumeet Kabra, RR Kabel (PGPFMB Alumni, 2008)
  • Sidharth Agrawal, Systematic Group (PGPFMB Alumni, 2000)
  • Ankit K., Capital A (PGPFMB Alumni, 2008)
  • Rama Mohan Rao Amara, Managing Director (Banking IT and Global Markets), SBI

The panellists highlighted the need to translate purpose into everyday practice, emphasising that purpose must move beyond rhetoric to become truly operational and drive meaningful organisational impact. They underscored the importance of transparency and authentic communication as foundations for building purpose-led enterprises. Purpose, they noted, reveals itself not in statements but in the everyday decisions leaders make, which serve to reinforce the organisation’s core values. They also observed that access to capital is often not the primary constraint for family businesses; rather, it is the clarity of vision and strength of governance that ultimately determine their ability to scale with purpose.

“Purpose must be clearly articulated and shared across all levels of an organisation, enabling open dialogue, freedom of thought, and the confidence to voice diverse perspectives.” — Prof. Tulsi Jayakumar

Through our research, teaching, and ongoing engagement with business leaders, SPJIMR continues to contribute to national and global thought leadership in family business and entrepreneurship. With a focus on purpose-driven growth, we strive to nurture enterprises that combine wisdom with innovation to create meaningful, long-term impact.
