Message from Alumni Relations Office |
|
|
Dear Alumnus,
This year marks the 10th edition of SPJIMR Alumni Awards, an important milestone for all of us. Over the last decade, we have honoured over 50 alumni for their achievements and celebrated with you as our community grows and thrives.
We have now decided to add a new category to the awards, the Alumni Service Award. This new award will recognise an alumnus every year for excellence in volunteering for SPJIMR and the alumni community. The initiative will help us recognise the work of alumni who contribute to the SPJIMR community. This contribution could be in any form – helping build alumni engagement, volunteering time with the Institute, galvanising alumni to raise funds for any SPJIMR related cause or in any other way that helps, supports and connects better with the SPJIMR community .
Nominations for the new award and the entire set of Alumni Awards 2021 are open. You could nominate yourself or anyone from the alumni community. We want to hear from you. More details are in the announcements section.
Stay Connected!
My warmest regards, Ratika

BIG IDEA The race to build a ‘desi’ Super App Last August, the Tatas announced their plans to launch a Super App. A whole bunch of global tech giants like Google, WhatsApp and Amazon and a behemoth like Reliance Jio are preparing to jump into the fray in India. And cement their dominance of a trillion-dollar digital economy. “Everyone has the same trophy in their sights: India’s massive internet user base, the second largest in the world,” writes Haresh Chawla. So, what’s the best way to understand how they work? Read here
BETTER DECISION MAKING Gigerenzer’s simple rules This is the age of big data. We are constantly in search of more numbers and more complex algorithms to crunch them. We seem to believe that this will solve most of the world’s problems. But simple rules of thumb often outperform complex models. In this award-wining piece, NS Ramnath profiles German psychologist Gerd Gigerenzer, who has been studying how humans make decisions. In the real world, where you are dealing with uncertainty, you need a set of simple rules of thumb that are robust and gut instincts sharpened by years of experience. You need an adaptive toolbox, Gigerenzer says. Read here
HIGH PERFORMANCE The inevitability of Roger Federer A little before Roger Federer took to Centre Court to play the finals at Wimbledon against Marin Cilic in 2017, there was much speculation this would be Federer’s swan song. He was 36 and Cilic was 28. But Charles Assisi argued Federer will win the game and that he wasn’t anyplace close to retirement. Charles had spoken to Sukhwant Basra, former sports editor at Hindustan Times who now runs a tennis academy with Leander Paes. Basra offered pointers with evidence to back him up. Age and talent are overrated. What counts is focus—it compels one to “practice deliberately” for long hours. How else do you explain the longevity of players such as Paes in tennis or the burning out of Vinod Kambli from cricket? Read here |
FUTURE OF WORK Masterclass: Reimagining work in the post pandemic world |
|
|
 |
The pandemic turned the world of work upside down. It first forced businesses to adapt to remote work or work-from-home (WFH). And now, more than a year later, it’s forcing them to grapple with a new set of dilemmas. Most employees, having tasted WFH, do not want to return to the office. Whereas employers would much rather have them return to the office and the old ways of working. Will a new hybrid model be the panacea? Harvard professor Tsedal Neeley draws on her research and ICICI Lombard’s Bhargav Dasgupta on his firm’s experiments. They discuss why leaders must prepare for hybrid workplaces. |

Robert Caro, The Power Broker, Recommended by Prof. Dinyar Patel; "This is perhaps the best single volume for understanding how power works. Caro's book is a biography of Robert Moses, an unelected New York planner who amassed extraordinary political power from the 1920s through the 1960s. It is a massive book but a gripping read" |

What they don't teach you at Harvard Business School, Mark McCormack, Recommended by Prof. Bhishm Chugani; "Has a lot of what is not necessarily taught at a Business School" |
