Anshu Gupta and Bindeshwar Pathak at SPJIMR for 'Heroes Speak' 2015

Wednesday, September 30, 2015

The 2015 Magsaysay award winner Mr. Anshu Gupta and Padma Bhushan Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak spent over three hours each at SPJIMR, as part of Heroes Speak 2015, an initiative of the DOCC. They interacted with the participants on issues and concerns that are often not discussed by urban India.

DOCC which stands for the Development of Corporate Citizenship is headed by Dr. Nirja Mattoo. It is a unique non-classroom pedagogic initiative at SPJIMR which exposes MBA participants to rural India.

Mr. Gupta, who visited the campus on September 30, 2015, is the founder of the NGO Goonj and is popularly known as the ‘Clothing Man’ of India for his mission to bring clothing among the list of subjects for the development sector. Mr. Gupta awed the audience with his passion to work for the greater good.

“Focus on the receiver’s dignity than the donor’s pride” he said, showing clips of the work Goonj does, and the impact it has on the lives of people involved. For example instead of direct donation, the team of Goonj identifies one major problem prevalent in the village and then brings the people together to solve it. They, in return, are provided with basic necessities like clothes, utensils etc, as a reward. Mr. Anshu Gupta urged the students to understand the extreme importance of challenging the myths, setting priorities right and inculcating a sense of ownership for things to change.

Dr. Pathak, who was at the campus on October 26, 2015, is a pioneer of the Sulabh concept of sanitation that has helped the poor and the depressed classes nationally and internationally. Dr. Pathak brought with him about half a century of experience in the social sector, demonstrating the various technologies in sanitation developed by the Sulabh Sanitation Movement, the foundation of which was laid when he was just 27 years old. The BBC World News Series, Horizons, voted the Sulabh technology as one of the five leading inventions of the world, acknowledging the originality of his genius.

"We recognise that political democracy is meaningless unless it also becomes a social democracy with progressive elimination of caste-class disparities," Dr. Pathak said. He has also given the Prime Minister of India a plan on how the nation could meet the target of making India free of open defecation by 2019, as part of the Swach Bharat Abhiyan.

Both the sessions brought deep insights and opened the MBA participants to the complexity of issues and problems of Bharat and how these issues are of significance to the managers and leaders of tomorrow.
