BIG IDEA Behind Infosys’ struggles to deliver the income tax project Why did the IT major mess up the high-profile government project? No one quite knows the answer. The clues, however, lie in the inherent difficulties in executing tech projects for the government, writes NS Ramnath. Read more here
BETTER DECISION MAKING Mental models from the School of Life Charlie Munger explained, each of us must either create our own models or embrace what exists to eventually make better decisions. Because the world is a complex and messy place. But there are people at work across various domains to help make sense of the world. If we work to understand the big ideas embedded in these attempts to help make sense of the world, and examine if we can use those ideas in other contexts, we’ll eventually make better decisions. Inspired by this, Charles Assisi talks about his WIP toolkit for making better decisions. Read more here
BUILDING A BRAND How to brand a humble piece of white cloth In October 2019, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Chinese President Xi Jinping at the shore temple in Mahabalipuram, he was clad in a veshti. Among the many memes that the photographs of the event generated, at least one had a reference to a specific brand of veshti, with a specific functionality. Ramraj veshtis with velcro to hold it to the waist. The brand is so famous in the south that when people see a powerful man wearing a veshti, they will likely associate it with Ramraj. How did this happen? NS Ramnath has some answers. Read more here
HIGH PERFORMANCE The man who admits he got it wrong on occasion—and still ruled world cricket In this podcast, listen to five-time ICC Umpire of the Year Simon Taufel on the game of cricket, and the learnings there for leaders who are looking to build high performance organisations. On getting it wrong and learning from it, he draws on the incident with Sachin Tendulkar at Trent Bridge in 2007, where he’d incorrectly given Sachin out for 91: “it's not about what you do at the time, it's about what you do next,” he says. Listen to the interview (or read the transcript), where Taufel uses the lens of cricket to talk about how we can help people see where their performance gaps are, and shift behaviour to bridge those gaps; what a good coach can bring to the table, as well as how be ‘coachable’; and what one can learn from different industries, different sports, and people from different walks of life. FUTURE OF WORK Masterclass: Personal Journeys with Ashish Vidyarthi |
Which are the places you think you are not supposed to be in? “We create our definitions, our boundaries,” says Ashish Vidyarthi. “As an actor, I've relished this ability to break any boundary of mine, both in terms of the characters that I play, and the cultures and subcultures that I explore. My lifelong wish is not to belong, not to be identified as ‘are you this are you that?’ I am not as. I'm also.” In this conversation, the creative entrepreneur and actor talks about breaking out of comfort zones, channelling fear into audacity, and how to not become a voyeur of your own success. |

Grassroots Innovation: Minds On the Margin Are Not Marginal Minds, Anil K. Gupta, Recommended by Prof. Rishikesan Parthiban; "The persistent socio-economic problems faced by the poor in different parts of the world requires us to go beyond top down external-actor-centric interventions and needs us to unearth and cross pollinate the genius of people at the grassroots. Innovative solutions by people at the margins are not necessarily sub-standard or jugaad, but have creative applications and uses in the mainstream economy as well. This book is a pure joy to read and might provide a new perspective to the readers" |

Deep work, Cal Newport, Recommended by Prof. Nilendra Pawar; "Highlights the importance of working in phases, offers practical tips. Highly relevant in a world that is full of distractions" |
