Bhavan's SPJIMR Alumni Newsletter October 2021 |
|
|
Message from Alumni Relations Office |
|
|
Dear Alumnus,
This newsletter was launched with a simple purpose: to keep you connected with the Institute without flooding your inbox. We want to inform, connect and build this bond and at the same time respect your privacy.
We think a monthly newsletter has helped us achieve some of that purpose. Do you agree? We would like to get a gauge from you... what is working and what is not?
To help us understand, we request you to fill this very brief feedback form. It’ll take you a minute or so to fill the survey.
I take this opportunity to wish each one of you and your family a very Happy Diwali and a happy new year, full of success and more connections.
My warmest regards, Ratika

BIG IDEA Why only three companies will dominate global markets Thought leaders Jagdish Sheth, Rajendra Sisodia and Can Uslay talk about why only three companies are starting to dominate the market. And the implications of this global phenomenon for businesses and leaders. They call the three dominating companies “generalists”; all other players in the market are “specialists”. This discussion is based on their latest book The Global Rule of Three: Competing with a Conscious Strategy. It builds on Sheth and Sisodia’s original work titled The Rule of Three nearly two decades ago. In the two decades that have passed since the original work, some things have changed. It’s still a rule of three, but technology and globalisation have brought a major transformation in the world. And there’s also the rise of emerging markets, together with economic reforms in socialist markets. Watch/Read here
HIGH PERFORMANCE A nudge against sleep and productivity Trying to stay more informed, entertained, educated, mindful, and fit? Having more apps, subscriptions, and content is counter-productive, says Charles Assisi. “I knew I wasn’t consuming much of their content. And when I scrutinised the charts for consumption patterns, in most cases either sleep or family time had been sacrificed,” he says. “But what hit harder was listening to the chief product officer at an Indian technology company that mines data… When they think their story is just right, they offer a free trial. The reason is simple. ‘You see,’ he said, ‘we aren’t very different from cocaine peddlers. The first shot is always free” Read more here
A LIVED LIFE The first thing I will do once the pandemic is over India’s Covid wave is receding. There are fewer Coronavirus cases. Nearly half the population has taken at least one dose of vaccine.
So, what’s the first thing you wish to do once this is over in some sense? Is it something you’ve missed in the past 18 months? Is it something you’ve always dreamt of and feel jolted by this shock to finally pursue? Is it some new idea entirely? We reached out to a diverse group of leaders from our Founding Fuel community. And received some interesting responses from Rajdeep Sardesai, Meenakshi Menon, Prof Nirmalya Kumar, Nikkhil Advani, Sundeep Waslekar, and Priyadarshini Rao. Read more here TECH LEADERS
The human intelligence behind intelligent machines |
 |
In this conversation, Prof. Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay,a professor of machine intelligence and director at the Indian Statistical Institute, talks about the big and complex problems that she believes machine learning can help solve; discovering patterns; learning from data; collaboration across disciplines; and how to get girls to take the STEM path (it starts at the primary education level, she says). Dr. Bandyopadhyay is also been a member of the Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council of the Prime Minister of India—one of the country’s highest honours for a scientist. |
