Abhyudaya has been operating since 2008. There have been many batches of mentors and mentees. Here is a story of a mentor-mentee bond that has stood the test of time.

Mentor: Sam Talya - PGDM 2011

Mentee: Koyna - Abhyudaya Batch 1

“Give time some time, and the positive momentum will come” - Koyna

A story of a young woman’s resilience, positivity, and leadership.

Around 15 years ago, as part of the MBA program at SPJIMR, Sam was introduced to Koyna, then a grade 8 student and one of the best in her class. She came from very humble beginnings—raised in a makeshift home on Versova beach, often washed away by high tides or municipality bulldozers clearing out slums. Even as a 14-year-old, she survived many days on a few biscuits, worked as a maid to support her education, and faced pressure from her family to get married.

As part of the Abhyudaya program at SPJIMR, Sam had the honor of mentoring her for a year to help with some of her subjects—Math and Science being the key ones. Post the program, Sam stayed in touch and followed her journey. Koyna moved from Mumbai to Pune to pursue her education and build vocational skills. She then became an HR Manager at a leading construction company in Pune. After childbirth, she now runs a business. But all of this has come after many sacrifices, overcoming difficulties and pushing through against the biases in society.

A few weeks ago, Koyna joined Sam at HIC Philips in Pune to address the cross-functional leadership team on her journey—the highs and lows, the learnings on growth and leadership. The summary being:

1. **Resilience**: It takes a lot to fight for what you believe in, especially when the whole structure is against you and society still discriminates based on gender. But as long as you continue to do the right thing and follow your heart, the efforts will pay off. Just need to give some time to time and not give up.

2. **Positive mindset**: Hope is a good thing. Any challenge has a solution, and the key is to find the time and energy to build a plan to mitigate it. Once there is ambition and a plan, keeping your mind and efforts focused on it gives a lot of positivity to yourself and your closest ones.

3. **Gratitude**: Nothing happens without people’s help. Any pain or challenge is relative to something else. While the whole world (including her parents) was against her, Koyna remains grateful to her parents and supports them financially every month. Being grateful is an important ingredient for inner peace and happiness.
