MEETINGS WITH PURPOSE
Another Year of Zoom meetings: Have they Helped or Harmed?

Arun Maira shares insights from his long experience of solving problems by bringing together a diverse set of people—be it in a relatively complex manufacturing facility or much more complex societal problems. Here are a few of the principles for good meetings.

  • Be clear on the purpose of the meeting and design the meeting accordingly.
  • For “systems” meetings, ensure ‘requisite variety’ of participants to get useful insights.
  • Listen to and learn with others.
  • All points of view must be heard at the outset, briefly, since time may be limited.
  • Ask all participants for any insights.
  • Brainstorm some steps to continue learning and improve collaboration. Read more here

BEYOND BUSINESS

5 Great Indian Speeches [FF Life]

These five speeches delivered by Indians explore some of the most important questions of our times. They were carefully chosen to represent a range of themes—leadership, defence, science, healthcare, sports and philosophy. The earliest speech in this list—one by Dr. BR Ambedkar—was delivered in 1949; and the latest by Dr. Soumya Swaminathan was delivered in August 2019 (where she in fact warns about how unprepared we are to face a flu pandemic). But we didn’t pick that because it predicted an important event, but because it touches upon something deeper. In fact, if there is a common thread that binds them all, they highlight the values we need the most today: Courage, thoughtfulness and kindness. Read more here

REFLECTION
The Road to Wisdom…

In his reflections on the year that’s ended and the new one that’s dawned, R Sriram offers perspectives on another year of the pandemic. He turns the gaze outwards and inwards.

Here’s one insight:

“One of the many ways that I err, is in speaking unnecessarily. James Clear, author of Atomic Habits has this advice:

Some questions to consider before you speak:

Does this need to be said?

Does this need to be said by me?

Does this need to be said by me right now?

Dickie Bush (@dickiebush) shares 21 questions to reflect on as you end 2021

  • What were the 5 most difficult conversations of the year?
  • And what are 5 difficult conversations I'm currently avoiding (with both myself and others)? Read more here

STRATEGIC AGILITY

Making a Flexible Plan for an Uncertain Future

In his podcast, Baba Prasad, president and CEO of Vivékin Group, talks about how to create a long-term plan when you don't know the long term. Many companies think of agility as just being speedy in their response. But you need to be agile in different ways to handle a changing environment. Here are two aspects among many he talks about:

  • We think of strategy as a plan for a set of actions to be executed in the future. Instead, think of it as a plan to build a set of flexibilities to handle a range of outcomes that may come upon us in the future.
  • There are five kinds of intelligences that help people and organisations be agile: analytical, operational, communication, inventive and visionary. You can mix the first four in different ways to respond to a particular situation. And the fifth intelligence: visionary, allows you to vet your approach for the long-term impact. Listen more here

PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS

Discovering and committing to one’s passion

Discovering and Committing to One's Passion | Raag & Kiran Bir Sethi | Talkin' 'Bout My Generation

How should one discover, pursue and commit to their passion?

Mother and son duo Kiran Bir Sethi and Raag Sethi discuss that in Season 02, Episode 05 of Talkin’ ‘Bout My Generation—a series that explores inter-generational and inter-cultural trends in consumption, work, entertainment, and many other things that are changing.

Their view? Forget about a Plan B. Only then will you know if it’s right for you.

From being a designer, Kiran pivoted to being an educationist in her 30s and started the Riverside School. It’s been 20 years already and Kiran says, “I think somewhere, eventually, the passion has to become all-consuming for you to continue to have the stamina to keep doing it. You have to be worthy of a passion.”

Raag—born to celebrity parents, renowned billiards player Geet Sethi and award-winning designer and educationist Kiran—saw close hand what passion and commitment looks like.

He tried his hand at billiards and also tried supporting his mom's venture, but his inner voice kept telling him that this was not what he was passionate about. He later ventured into music and founded Compass Box Studio in Ahmedabad.
