INCLUSION & DIVERSITY
How diverse really is India Inc’s diversity agenda?

In the latest edition of Ground Realities, Ipsita Bandyopadhyay, Himal Belwal and Piyul Mukherjee from Quipper Research trace the diverse and inspiring trajectories of three women as they navigate the corporate world while living with a disability, as well as key members of the Youth4Jobs (YFJ) team who have been facilitating many such journeys. One of the stories is that of 30-year-old Y. Sasikala, who was born with dwarfism. Her aim was always to be a sportswoman. She was training in shot put and discus throw, but her heart was in badminton. She’d been a good sportswoman, but her home state Andhra Pradesh lacked opportunities for para sports. “I kept trying to crack government exams through the para sports quota but in our area, there is no stipend or incentive for para sports persons,” she recalls. She’d won a national bronze medal in badminton and a state gold medal in discus throw and shot put, yet there was no provision for her. She recalls her despair during this time when she was trying to make an income and shift to her favourite sport.

The story talks about how YFJ helped her get the skills for a better job and her fight to become a champion. Read more here

PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS

How to write better

Clear, lucid writing is an essential skill where much of the work is remote and with dispersed teams. And, “If you want to be a writer, you must do two things above all others: read a lot and write a lot. There’s no way around these two things that I’m aware of, no shortcut,” Stephen King articulates in no uncertain terms in his magnificent book, On Writing. So how do you read better? (It’s not about the number of books you read) How do you write clearly? (It begins with what you want to communicate) What are some thumb rules of good writing? Read more here

CAREER PATHS
The insider with an outside in view

"Should I continue as a full-time consultant to the chief transformation officer in my firm? Or am I better off moving to a part-time consulting role, take on other clients, and acquire a more diverse experience?"

It’s a question that many leaders face, but only a few of them actually give up the operational/line role and take up an internal consulting role. Doing this has many advantages as well as disadvantages—for the organisation and the individual taking on the role. C S Swaminathan identifies a few and explains the nuances. For example, he writes, “The maturity of the organisation matters a lot in how they treat the careers of internal consultants.” So how can organisations and internal consultants maximise the opportunity of the arrangement? Read more here

HIGHER EDUCATION

Untold stories about how India built its higher ed institutions

When Ashoka University was in the news last year with high profile exits of people such as Arvind Subramaniam and Pratap Bhanu Mehta, the question on our mind was, why? When India started its journey to create places such as TIFR, IIT Kanpur, the Indian Institute of Sciences, IRMA and IIM-Ahmedabad, some of the finest minds such as Homi Bhabha, Ravi Mathai and PK Kelkar among others were invested in the projects. And they went on to build world-class institutions that continue to stand. Just how could they do it in a young country starved of resources?

Many goosebump-inducing stories and lessons on leadership emerged. Lesson #1 included “Institution before personal glory”. Listen here

From Bombay to the Bay Area: The journey of “becoming a VC from nothing”

From Bombay to the Bay Area: The Journey of “Becoming a VC from Nothing” ft. Shruti Gandhi

In this episode of Hustle Fuel, Shruti Gandhi, General Partner and Founding Engineer at Array Ventures, talks about the power of people and relationships in building an entrepreneurial career from nothing, how to hustle when you know it’s the right time for you, and what it takes to be a constant learner.

One of the aspects Shruti speaks about is how she was trying to break into venture capital during her MBA at Chicago Booth. At the time, she believed that she should simply leverage herself and her skillset (and not her network) to make that happen. However, she says, “Venture is all about knowing the right people, and who you know… That’s what I’ve done best in my life so far—keeping the right people (whether it’s a deal or anything else) abreast so they’re not caught by surprise. Because when someone is prepared, they have something better to offer—even for you.”
