Admissions Discover Spjimr ~ About Us

The relevance of management education to industry and business dynamic needs for future leaders has been debated in the West for a long time. The management education facilitates early entry of program participants in industry and probably also promises easy growth in the beginning of one's own professional career. But research has supported a view that it does not enable MBA program participants to become industry leaders of tomorrow.

This is because from amongst the three pillars of management education Knowledge, Skills and Attitude (KSA) --

  • Management education traditionally focuses on gaining knowledge and acquiring skills through conventional pedagogic tools.
  • Developing "attitude" that is deep rooted in one's values through unconventional pedagogic innovations is by far totally ignored.

SPJIMR has developed a unique selection process for its various programs.

Focus on mere IQ as the most important criterion is avoided. Instead, it is deployed as a cut-off point and is strongly supported by assessment of consistency of academic record, thorough testing of subject knowledge and basic skills, scientific assessment of behavioral profile and raising eligibility levels for applying to the institute.

The uniqueness of the selection process resides in identification of appropriate managerial traits in aspiring candidates and rigorous assessment through a variety of ways, which are essentially experimental in nature. These are: -

  • Leadership ----character and integrity
  • Sensitivity to social inequality, injustice,
  • Adversity quotient---ability to face adverse situations
  • Ability to work in teams
  • Humility

The candidates with unusual background are carefully looked at before a final decision is taken. Continuous improvements in selection processes are effected through relentless innovations such as pregrading of application forms on multiple dimensions, discussion and situation analysis in groups, iterative stage wise computer analysis of selection data, accelerated admission to outstanding applicants.

The sole purpose of this exercise is to maintain objectivity and also to resist societal pressures throughout the selection process. And it is a matter of great satisfaction to SPJIMR community that the efforts have borne fruits in ample measure.

However, selection criteria and processes are customized within this overall broad framework according to the requirements of different programs. The details of which are given in each program of the institute.
