About Abhyudaya

Project Abhyudaya

Bhavan’s SPJIMR is the first B-school in India to launch a mentorship program. This pedagogic innovation aims at preparing its participants for top management roles as part of the curriculum. It aims at changing the attitude of the participants from the self centred approach to a service orientation. This project is conceptualized and guided by the Honourable Dean Dr. M.L. Shrikant.

The project started in June 2008

  • Covering 25 schools
  • Present strength of Sitaras - 89
  • Inducting 45 Sitaras every year
  • Eight mediums of instruction
  • Equal number of boys and girls

Objectives

Abhyudaya Objective

The project aims at reinforcing the strengths of the children (whom we call ‘Sitaras’) adopted through this project and equip them to compete with the best in society. Potential children for this project have been identified from BMC and aided schools. Bhavan’s, through SPJIMR, is making an attempt to play the role of a catalyst by supporting the children so that they are able to realize their full potential.
This project, spanning around 8 to 9 years, provides a comprehensive learning platform for the Sitaras through the involvement of Bhavan’s institutions like A.H. Wadia High School, Sardar Patel College of Engineering, and Bhavan’s College of Arts, Science & Commerce apart from SPJIMR. We hope, that as a part of the formal education some Sitaras may join SPJIMR later and contribute to society by mentoring some other Sitaras.

Mentoring

Abhyudaya aims at developing mentoring skills as a part of the General Management curriculum. Mentoring is a 1.5 credit program spread over one year. Through the mentoring program it aims at:

  • To build an attitude of social responsiveness
  • To emphasize on Spiritual Quotient(SQ)which naturally strengthens Emotional Quotient(EQ)
  • Sensitivity to deprivation and poverty in Urban India
  • Analyze impact on their own psyche and self development

Dean's Message

Developing sensitivity to right attitudes and softer skills with a view to establish a personal plan of action for imbibing them are essential prerequisites of sound management education. We at SPJIMR strongly believe this. We realize the practical difficulties in successfully implementing such a program because lower level managerial jobs place an emphasis on harder analytical skills. Difficulty in developing effective contents for the required pedagogy, calling for experienced and wise ‘teachers’ and formulating short-term objectives for preparing candidates are some of the barriers that have prevented other management institutes from addressing these needs.

At SPJIMR, we have been pioneers in establishing initiatives to meet the above-mentioned need and believe have had reasonable success in putting into place a portfolio of path breaking innovative pedagogies. Project ABHYUDAYA- a Sanskrit word meaning welfare and development of all is the most recent one.

As a part of this project bright children from economically weaker sections mostly from BMC schools are adopted in the program and equipped to take their place on par with the best in society. SPJIMR plays the role of a catalyst to give financial and other support so that they may realize their full potential. The focus of this project is to strengthen the strengths of these children till they complete their formal education. Management participants mentor selected students and develop some fine qualities of successful leadership.

‘Abhyudaya’ also meets the charter of Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan , that of being socially responsive, by induction of the school, colleges and other institutes of the Bhavans parivar as the project will demonstrate over the years.

The Indian scriptures suggest Abhyudaya and Nishrayash (spiritual growth) as laudable objectives for adult education. Indeed it should be the objective for life long learning.

Based on the above assumptions, we believe ‘Abhyudaya’ would carve another successful and effective approach to management education.
